Anti-wrinkle injections, often referred to by a brand name Botox, contain the toxin OnabotulinumtoxinA. It is a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, and is highly purified to ensure it is suitable for use. Anti-wrinkle injections are a prescription only medication which can be injected into muscles to relax them to subsequently reduce wrinkles.
The toxin works by preventing the release of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the nerves) to stop muscle contraction.
Wrinkles usually develop over time due to repeated muscle contraction. Therefore, by relaxing the muscle, we can try to soften existing lines and aim to prevent new wrinkles from forming.
Your clinician will advise if anti-wrinkle injections would be suitable for you during your consultation, and what you could expect regarding results.
It can be used to treat the forehead, frown lines, crows feet, pebbled chin and gummy smile. It can also be used to treat cosmetic sweat stains and help slim the face. It is typically used to reduce the signs of ageing for all genders.
• Prior to the appointment, you should not drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages for at least 24 hours, and to stop applying tretinoin for at least 48 hours.
• You should avoid medications which can increase your risk of bleeding, like NSAIDs or aspirin, unless advised by your doctor in which case you should discuss with your practitioner.
Following consultation, your practitioner will clean the area and mark out surface anatomy. They will plan the injection pattern and inject the toxin to the target area.
Following injection of the toxin, it is recommended to avoid lying down or leaning forward for 4 hours.
It is also recommended to avoid pressure to the treated area, strenuous exercise for 48 hours, as well as caffeine, alcohol, steam rooms, saunas and very hot showers.
Common side effects include headache, bruising, bleeding, and pain. Given the natural variation in anatomy, it is also possible to experience other side effects like heavy eyebrows, eyelid drop, swelling and infection.
Results usually last up to 12 weeks, although some clients find it lasts longer, and rarely, shorter.

Anti-wrinkle injections are freeze dried, vacuum stored, purified protein produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. The active ingredient is OnabotulinumtoxinA.
Anti-wrinkle injections work by temporarily relaxing the muscles (or glands) which cause wrinkles (or sweating) by trimming off a receptor that usually helps pass the message from the nerve to the muscle. These receptors regenerate in the body, hence why the results wear off after a few months.
Anti-wrinkle injections are considered safe when injected correctly and there is good knowledge of the underlying anatomy. However, due to physiological variation, there is always a risk of side-effects. You can discuss these in further detail with your clinician.
You should discuss any medical conditions you have, especially neuromuscular disorders, and any medications you take.
Anti-wrinkle injections are not recommended for patients with a history of dysphagia or impaired swallowing.
Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to treat a number of different areas. These include:
Forehead lines – reduce horizontal wrinkles across the forehead
Frown lines – often referred to as ‘11’ lines, they are the vertical wrinkles between your eyebrows
Crow’s feet – can treat fine lines which develop around the eyes, usually caused by frequent smiling or squinting.
Brow Lift – to lift the eyebrows
Gummy smile – reduce the gum tissue visible when smiling by relaxing a muscle in the upper lip.
Perioral lines – also known as smoker’s or lipstick lines – wrinkles surrounding the lips
Lip flip – slight increase in lip volume appearance by relaxing muscle surrounding it
Jawline contouring – relaxation of the masseter muscles to increase definition of the jawline
Neck bands – address vertical lines and sagging which can develop in the neck.
Anti-wrinkle injections can also be used to treat cosmetic sweat staining and cosmetic facial slimming.

Typical side effects include bruising, redness, bleeding and swelling. You can also experience headaches, flu-like symptoms and pain at the injection site.
More rare side effects include infection, allergic reaction, eyelid drop, eyebrow drop or cheek drop.
Ensure your appointment is scheduled at least 4 weeks prior to any event or celebration.
Reschedule your appointment if you find a rash, cold sore or blemish in the treatment area.
Discuss with your clinician, and your regular doctor, if you are taking any regular blood thinning medication – DO NOT stop taking any prescribed medications without discussing prior.
Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages for at least 24 hours.
Stop tretinoin treatment, St John’s Wart, Multivitamins and NSAIDs at least 2 days prior.
Consider the benefits of arnica or bromelain.
