Dermal fillers are a non-surgical intervention which can help patients restore a youthful appearance. They are made of hyaluronic acid, a carbohydrate naturally made in the body with high turnover. As we grow older, hyaluronic acid is made more slowly but broken down just as quickly resulting in lost volume. To counteract this, dermal fillers are injected under the skin to replace or augment volume with the aim of improving the aesthetics of the face. The filler we inject is made of cross-linked hyaluronic acid, which means it can last longer in the body.
Dermal fillers can be used in a number of places to restore or increase volume. This
includes the nasolabial folds, the melolabial folds (marionette lines), the lips, the
perioral areas and the cheeks. They can also be used in combination with other
treatments to improve deep set wrinkles. We are also able to offer advanced
treatments to augment the chin and define the jawline, improve tear troughs, templesand forehead, as well as offering non-surgical rhinoplasty.
Prior to the appointment, you should not drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages for at least 24 hours, and to stop applying tretinoin for at least 48 hours. You should avoid medications which can increase your risk of bleeding, like NSAIDs or aspirin, unless advised by your doctor in which case you should discuss with your practitioner.
You will initially have a consultation where your clinician will discuss your medical history and treatment aims. Medical grade prescribed numbing cream will be applied for at least 20 minutes prior to your appointment, then the area will be cleaned and the filler will then be injected as agreed to the target areas. Your practitioner will advise about post treatment care; this includes avoiding flying for up to 2 weeks, avoiding alcohol, caffeine, makeup and massages for 48 hours, and touching the area for at least 4 hours.
Common side-effects include bruising, swelling, pain, redness and some bleeding. More serious side-effects could include allergic reaction, infection or a vascular occlusion.
If this were to occur, your clinician will dissolve the filler and monitor you for a few hours. Results will be seen soon after the appointment, once any swelling has subsided (which could last up to 2 weeks). Results will typically be seen for 9 to 18 months.

Dermal fillers are substances made of hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring carbohydrate) which are cross-linked to slow the breakdown by the body.
Anti-wrinkle injections are considered safe when injected correctly and there is good knowledge of the underlying anatomy. However, due to physiological variation, there is always a risk of side-effects. You can discuss these in further detail with your clinician.
You should discuss any medical conditions you have, especially neuromuscular disorders, and any medications you take.
Anti-wrinkle injections are not recommended for patients with a history of dysphagia or impaired swallowing.
Ensure your appointment is scheduled at least 4 weeks prior to any event or celebration.
