What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP for short, is a staple of regenerative medicine. It has been used by mainstream medical doctors to treat sports injuries and heal wounds since the 1990’s, and has recently been utilised in aesthetic medicine. It utilises the body’s own blood, which is processed using a special machine to separate growth and healing factors, and re-injected into the target area. This highly concentrated solution finds damaged and ageing cells and aids in healing them, resulting in refreshed and rejuvenated skin or hair follicles.

Suitability and Consultation

PRP is typically used to treat skin on the face and neck, scars and can be used to stimulate hairgrowth in the scalp.

Treatment Areas

Before Your Appointment

Prior to the appointment, you should not drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages for at least 24 hours, and to stop applying tretinoin for at least 48 hours. You should avoid medications which can increase your risk of bleeding, like NSAIDs or aspirin, unless advised by your doctor in which case you should discuss with your practitioner.

On the day

Your PRP journey will start with a consultation with our clinicians to discuss your treatment aims and likely results. On the day of the appointment, the clinician will collect a blood sample and process it in the centrifuge. When the PRP serum is ready, it will be injected into the target area or could be combined with other treatments like microneedling.

Results will start to be seen after 3 to 6 months, with best results around 15 to 18 months after the treatment. Your clinician will advise the best treatment plan tailored to your needs, but we usually recommend a course of 4 to 6 sessions initially followed by two annual maintenance sessions.

What is PRP?
  • PRP, otherwise known as Platelet Rich Plasma, is a concentrated serum of plasma, platelets and other growth factors. It is obtained by taking a sample of your blood, spinning it in our centrifuge machine to separate the different components of the blood. We then utilise the regenerative parts to obtain results.
  • PRP works by isolating the plasma, platelets and growth factors in the blood, then injecting them into the target areas. The growth factors improve blood circulation in the area and stimulate the healing or growth of new hair follicles or cells to rejuvenate the skin.
  • PRP is considered safe when administered correctly and there is good knowledge of the underlying anatomy. However, due to physiological variation, there is always a risk of side effects.
  • As PRP uses cells from your own body, rather than introducing a new chemical, it is considered safe and with low chance of allergic reaction.
  • PRP is not advised for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. .
  • PRP can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, scarring, hyperpigmentation, sun damage and poorly hydrated skin. It will also result in improve skin firmness, tone and texture.
